Job Description

Georgia Public Broadcasting is seeking an Environmental Reporter for its Savannah, GA location. The role involves covering environmental, climate, and agricultural issues in Coastal and South Georgia, with responsibilities including story pitching, writing, and producing content for various media platforms. The position requires a bachelor's degree in journalism or related field, two years of reporting experience, and strong editorial skills. It is a part-time role, averaging 20 hours per week.
Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) is hiring an experienced reporter to cover the environment, climate, and agricultural resources of Coastal and South Georgie and to report on the impact of the changing planet on the people, places and environments of the region. This position is based in Savannah and will have significant editorial and creative autonomy while operating under GPB’s editorial standards and review process. The reporter will be expected to attend daily news meetings, pitch stories and participate in edit sessions with editorial supervisors while working an average of approximately 20 hours per week. They will be expected to file for GPB News across radio, digital and social media. This position will report to GPB’s News Director. GPB is a statewide dual licensee comprised of 9 PBS television stations and 22 NPR radio stations that broadcast across the state of Georgia.

Candidate Responsibilities:

Research and pitch story ideas and establish contacts within assigned region and beat

Participate in daily planning meeting and attend other staff meetings as required

Write, edit and produce stories for radio, digital and social media

Manage and communicate schedule to management and meet deadlines as assigned

Record audio interviews and sound, track voice over scripts and edit within Adobe audition or other audio editing software

Take photos or capture video with cellphone or other visual production equipment as needed

Write and file digital stories within the GPB content management system

Work with the social media team on content for GPB News’ social media platforms

Participate in feedback sessions on work product with editors and managers

Manage the GPB workspace and studio in Savannah and facilitate interviews there as needed

Perform additional or related duties as assigned or required

Candidate Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications or related field or equivalent education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job

Minimum of two years reporting and writing experience for a news organization

Experience covering climate and environmental issues strongly preferred

Experience in Public Media a plus

Ability to produce informative and engaging stories across GPB’s digital, audio and social media platforms under deadline

Experience with audio editing software such as Adobe Audition

Experience with photography and video production a plus

Able to write clearly and effectively using AP style

Ability to develop a network of sources and contacts and establish working relationships with them

Ability to remain current on issues impacting Georgia’s climate and environment

Ability to work collaboratively with other reporters and editors

Ability to work independently with limited daily oversight

Strong editorial judgment and experience producing content for clearly defined audiences.

Access to a motor vehicle and possession of a valid driver’s license to cover stories across the region
