Overview

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking an Associate Environmental Specialist or Environmental Specialist to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site.

An Associate Environmental Specialist or Environmental Specialist is responsible for coordinating and providing compliance-based oversight and expertise to ensure proper stewardship and work activities are conducted in accordance with applicable environmental regulations and policies.

Responsibilities

An Associate Environmental Specialist (Grade 65) or Environmental Specialist (Grade 67):
• Learns and keeps informed of pertinent information and developments in areas such as applicable laws and regulations established by the Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Supports higher level specialists to ensure compliance with environmental and radioactive material permits, licenses, applications, and records to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements established by federal and state regulatory agencies.
• Prepares limited environmental compliance reports and guidance documents.
• Prepares limited written oral, tabular, calculations, and graphic reports summarizing requirements and regulations, including enforcement documentation.
• Prepares, organizes, and maintains reports and inspection records.
• Supports processes to verify radioactive materials and hazardous chemicals and wastes are handled, stored, and disposed of in accordance with regulations.
• Supports investigations, as directed, to determine the nature of suspected violations and to obtain evidence of violations.
• Learns and observes proper safety precautions, rules, regulations, and practices so that unsafe conditions can be recognized and proper safety protocols implemented.
• Under specific direction inspects waste pretreatment, treatment, and disposal facilities and systems for conformance to federal, state, or local regulations.
• Observes and records facility operations and field conditions, gathering, interpreting, and reporting data such as flow meter readings and chemical levels.
• Participates in the development of spill prevention programs and hazardous waste rules, regulations, and recommend corrective actions for hazardous waste problems.
• Performs and prepares standard waste characterization documents and calculations in support of facility requirements.
• Other duties as assigned.

Additional responsibilities for an Environmental Specialist (Grade 67):
• May serve as an interface for Liquid Waste Operations with the regulatory agencies.
• Monitors follow-up actions in cases where violations were found, and reviews compliance

monitoring reports and manages responses to non-compliances.
• Assists in determining sampling locations and methods, and supports collection of and

environmental effluents air, water or wastewater samples for analysis, as required.
• Determines which sites and violation reports to investigate and may coordinate compliance and

enforcement activities with other government agencies.
• Analyzes and implements state, federal or local requirements as necessary to maintain approved

pretreatment, pollution prevention, storm water runoff and radioactive material programs.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in a science or Engineering discipline with relative experience

Master's degree in a science or Engineering discipline

Minimum Pay

USD $59,208.00/Yr.

Maximum Pay

USD $131,280.00/Yr.
