About the position
The Associate, Climate and Energy will support the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) in strengthening the U.S. electrical grid. This role involves collaboration across FAS' Clean Energy and Climate/Environment teams to ensure the grid is prepared for future demands and threats, while positioning the U.S. as a leader in grid technology. The Associate will engage with various sectors to enhance grid resilience and advance innovation, addressing challenges posed by the transition to a clean-energy economy and increasing electricity demand.
Responsibilities
• Support FAS activities to strengthen the U.S. electrical grid.

• Work across Clean Energy and Climate/Environment teams on initiatives related to grid resilience and innovation.

• Learn about federal policies and programs related to grid operations and resilience.
,
• Think creatively about policy and technology solutions for grid challenges.
,
• Explore intersections between grid technology and other domains like AI and climate policy.
,
• Identify adaptable approaches to grid management from local, regional, and international examples.
,
• Help organize workshops and roundtables to promote grid solutions.
,
• Coordinate projects involving multiple FAS teams and external partners.
Requirements
• 5-8 years of professional experience in relevant domains such as engineering, computer science, operations, public policy, or public administration.

• Strong planning and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple timelines and deliverables.

• Ability to take initiative and independently set goals and develop strategies.

• Strong writing, presentation, and communication skills.

• Collaborative mindset and comfortable working with diverse partners.

• Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for navigating complex systems to drive change.

• Familiarity with U.S. government operations and policymaking, especially in scientific research and technological innovation.
Nice-to-haves
• Experience working with or within federal government.

• Familiarity with mechanisms supporting technological innovation, such as prize competitions or venture capital funding.
