Environmental Litigation Associate – Mid-Level
Locations: San Francisco, San Diego, Palo Alto, Los Angeles
Are you an experienced environmental litigation attorney looking to take your career to the next level? Our AmLaw 100 client, a top firm recognized for its expertise in environmental law and complex litigation, is seeking a mid-level litigation associate to join its Environmental Litigation team in California. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge environmental issues alongside some of the industry’s leading practitioners.
About the Role
As a valued member of this prominent practice group, you will handle a diverse portfolio of high-profile environmental litigation matters, regulatory compliance, and enforcement defense. You will advise clients across industries, including heavy industry, defense, chemical manufacturing, and maritime, on emerging environmental concerns, liability exposure, and complex regulatory frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
• Represent clients in matters involving key environmental statutes, including CERCLA, RCRA, and California-specific laws.
• Provide strategic advice on regulatory compliance, enforcement actions, cost recovery, permitting, and public relations concerns.
• Collaborate with technical experts, including environmental consultants, on matters involving remediation and environmental operations.
• Negotiate agreements relating to compliance and cost recovery while mitigating liability exposure.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
• 3+ years of relevant experience in environmental litigation or regulatory compliance at a reputable law firm or agency.
• Strong knowledge of California state environmental agencies; federal agency experience is a plus.
• Experience with sediment-based contamination, remediation, and advising clients in industries such as chemical manufacturing, defense, or maritime.
• JD from an accredited law school and admission to the California Bar.
• Outstanding analytical, writing, and oral communication skills.
• Collaborative mindset, attention to detail, and strong business judgment.
