The Department of Forest Management (DFM) in the
WA Franke College of Forestry and Conservation (FCFC) at the
University of Montana (UM) invites applications for an
Assistant Teaching Professor (non-tenure track) of
Forest Ecology and Management. We encourage applications from
individuals with a passion for undergraduate education and
high-impact learning practices, and who can bring professional
experience in forest resource management into the classroom and
connect students with career opportunities in forestry and related
fields.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses to
support DFM's professionally accredited undergraduate forestry
program, as well as other programs in the FCFC. Teaching
responsibilities will include 15 credits per academic year
(typically 5 courses) with a 3-credit (one course) release in the
first year. Course assignments will be tailored to program needs
and the strengths of the candidate and may include field skills,
forest ecology, forest insects and disease, silviculture, fire and
fuel management, forest economics, decision-support technologies,
and land management planning. DFM's forestry curriculum prioritizes
field-based learning, and there are many opportunities for field
instruction. The successful candidate will be hired on academic
year contract that is renewable annually, with the opportunity to
pursue additional compensation in the summer (such as formal summer
teaching, research projects, and engagement with FCFC operations
such as the Montana Forest and Conservation Experiment Station).
FCFC is highly interdisciplinary and has multiple programs that
promote collaboration across departments. Additional information

DFM has a multidisciplinary faculty who focus on developing the
foundation and tools necessary for sustainable management of forest
landscapes. Faculty are active in basic and applied research, with
noteworthy productivity in fire and water sciences, remote sensing,
forest ecology and management, and silviculture. DFM faculty direct
the Montana Climate Office, the National Center for Landscape Fire
Analysis, and the Wilderness Institute, each with significant
outlays in infrastructure, grants and contracts, staff, postdocs,
and graduate students (M.S. Forestry and Ph.D. Forestry and
Conservation Sciences). DFM stewards a nationally accredited
professional B.S. in Forestry that has served students since 1913.
The Forestry major has nearly doubled enrollment during the last
five years and now serves over 200 students.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
• M.S. or Ph.D. in forestry, ecology, or related natural
resources field.
• Demonstrated experience in education and mentoring (e.g.,
classroom, professional training programs, workshops, outreach,
extension, or comparable experience).
• A record of effective collaboration with a commitment to
ethics, openness, and collegiality.
Preferred Qualifications
• Three or more years of professional experience in forest
management or forest ecosystem research with applications to forest
management and decision support.
• Formal experience teaching undergraduate courses in the fields
of interest.
• Evidence of successful teaching and demonstrated experience
with assessing student learning.
• A record of previous experience mentoring students and/or early
career professionals.
• Demonstrated experience with high-impact learning practices,
including field learning, service-learning, community-engaged
teaching, internships, and other types of experiential
learning.
• Ability to connect students to professional opportunities and
career pathways.
• Experience with multiple teaching modalities, including hybrid
and online instruction.
