Job Description
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Hydrology for the Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science, starting August 2025. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Geology or a related field, with a focus on groundwater hydrology and an interest in karst systems. Responsibilities include teaching geology courses, establishing a research program, and contributing to Environmental Science programs. Applications are due by November 1, 2024.
About the position
The Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science (BGE) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in hydrology, set to begin in August 2025. This role is designed for candidates whose research and teaching will focus on hydrology, particularly with a strong background in groundwater hydrology. Preference will be given to those with an interest in karst systems, leveraging UTC's newly acquired cave system for educational and research purposes. The successful candidate will play a vital role in contributing to the BS Geology, BS Environmental Science, and MS Environmental Science programs through both research and teaching. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Geology or a closely related field, with ABD candidates considered provided they complete their degree before the start date. The position requires the ability to teach introductory geology courses, as well as undergraduate and graduate-level hydrogeology and other hydrology-related courses. Additionally, the candidate should be capable of establishing a successful, extramurally funded research program in hydrogeology, incorporating GIS into both teaching and research, and contributing to the Environmental Science programs. Collaboration with students, faculty, and staff is essential, as is the implementation of high-impact practices in teaching and student engagement, in alignment with UTC's Strategic Plan. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to develop an independent research program that engages students and attracts external funding, particularly one that utilizes the unique karst topography and cave systems in the Chattanooga area. They should also be prepared to provide service to the university, community, and professional organizations, and have plans to enhance participation of underrepresented groups in the sciences. The successful applicant will be expected to assist UTC in achieving its strategic goals, contributing to a vibrant academic community. Applications will be reviewed starting November 1, 2024, and must include a cover letter, a statement of research experience and vision, a statement of teaching experience and philosophy, a curriculum vitae, unofficial transcripts, and a list of three references. At least one reference should be able to comment on the candidate's teaching abilities. Questions regarding the position can be directed to Dr. Gretchen Potts, the BGE Department Head.
