Job Description

Ohio Wesleyan University is hiring an Assistant Professor in Environment and Sustainability, focusing on Earth Sciences, particularly hydrology and soils. The role involves teaching three courses per semester, developing new courses, engaging in research with undergraduates, and advising students. Candidates should have a Ph.D. or be near completion. The position emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches and includes support for junior faculty through resources like start-up funding and research leave.
About the position

The Department of Environment and Sustainability (ENVS) at Ohio Wesleyan University is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor position in Earth Sciences, focusing on hydrology and/or soils. This role is designed for candidates who are not only passionate about teaching and research but also interested in contributing to applied work in environmental and natural resource management. ENVS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary department that offers majors in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, and Geography. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate flexibility, creativity, and an interdisciplinary approach in their work, as well as the ability to integrate social and environmental justice into their teaching and research practices. The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per semester, including a broad introductory earth science course (ENVS 111). Additionally, they will have the opportunity to develop new courses that leverage their expertise in soils, hydrology, and environmental management, with a focus on interdisciplinary and DEI-centered content. The candidate will also engage in a consistent line of earth science research that actively involves undergraduate students, fostering a collaborative research environment. Integrating aspects of the OWU Connection—such as travel learning, student research, internships, and service learning—into their teaching and research activities will be a key component of this role. Moreover, the position includes advising students on their academic journeys and providing service to the department, university, and professional community. The department is committed to supporting junior faculty through extensive resources, including start-up funding, pre-tenure research leave, and funding for student-faculty research collaboration. This position is part of a cluster of roles aimed at diversifying the curriculum and faculty at Ohio Wesleyan University, which values equity and interdisciplinarity, and fosters close working relationships with students through experiential learning programs.
