Assistant Herdsman/Apprentice, Organic Dairy Farm

SpringWood Organic Farm is hiring a full-time Assistant Herdsman/Apprentice for their organic dairy farm in Kinzers, PA. Responsibilities include herd management, feeding, cleaning, and equipment maintenance. The job requires a motivated individual eager to learn, with varied start times and occasional evening responsibilities. Salary ranges from $12 to $20 per hour. No degree is required.

Seeking a hard working, full-time employee who is motivated and wants to learn.

Daily herd management duties include but not limited to:

\t

• Moving cows to/from pasture
\t\t
• Winter/spring season dry cow & heifer herd feeding.
\t\t
• Mixing and feeding dairy herd TMR
\t\t
• Scrape cow lot and stack manure
\t\t
• Till and manage bedded packs
\t\t
• Wash off skid loader if dirty
\t\t
• Calving season includes lots of cow sorting and calf handling/feeding
\t

Weekly duties include but not limited to:

• Haul stacked manure to composting area
\t\t
• Manage bedding in calf runs
\t\t
• Water tank trough cleanliness
\t\t
• Maintain and lube feed mixing and lot cleaning equipment including tractor, mixer, and skid loader
\t\t
• Maintain and lube all equipment used for compost making and spreading including tractor, composter, manure wagon, and spreader
\t\t
• Keep milking parlor clean and maintained.
\t\t
• Maintain and lube mower tractor, gator, four wheeler, and hi pressure washer
\t

Warmer season fieldwork help as able and available around daily chores.

\t

Employee start time varies with season but is normally 7 AM, with 30 minute break. Ends 5-6 PM once afternoon chores are complete. Occasional evening responsibility with cows or hay harvest.
