Job Description

Sheffield City Council seeks an Assistant Director of City Sustainability to lead initiatives aimed at enhancing the city's sustainability and addressing climate change challenges. The role involves strategic planning, relationship building, and implementing innovative sustainability projects. Candidates should have industry insight and experience in leading change across various programs. This is a full-time position based in Sheffield, UK, emphasizing the city's commitment to sustainability.
Sheffield is not only England’s fourth largest city, but also the greenest city in the UK. Our newly adopted Growth Plan underlines the City Council’s absolute commitment to sustainability and we are shaping our city for a future that is well prepared for the challenges of climate change.

Our vision is of a city that’s easier to get around, better connected, safer for more vulnerable travellers and more sustainable; and these two exciting roles will be at the heart of accelerating our progress towards realising that vision. It’s an exciting time to be in Sheffield. You’ll discover inspiring leaders who put the city first, clear, ambitious strategic plans, as well as the resources and partnerships we need to deliver them.

Sheffield is a pioneer of sustainability: one of the first places in the UK to build a district heating network, we also designed the internationally acclaimed ‘Grey to Green’ scheme around Kelham and Riverside, combining sustainable urban drainage with active travel routes and flood-resistant planting. We are also developing Sheffield’s first Green Bond investment programme.

These examples perfectly illustrate the kind of ambitious, innovative thinking we’re looking for, and you’ll be just the person to provide it. You’ll bring industry insight, sustainability leadership and a consistent track record of delivery. Experience of working across a range of different programmes, leading change and building relationships with local and strategic investors would be a definite advantage.
