About the position

The NOAA Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is seeking an Assistant/Associate Professor of Environmental Social Science, Economics, or Policy for a full-time, 9-month position starting in Fall 2022. This role is integral to the Center, which comprises a consortium of seven institutions and over 30 scientists dedicated to teaching, mentoring, and conducting research in NOAA-related sciences. The successful candidate will join the School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences (SANS), which includes three departments: the Department of Natural Sciences (DNS), the Department of Agriculture, Food, and Resource Sciences (DAFRS), and the Department of Human Ecology (DHE). The DNS offers various B.S. degrees, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. interdisciplinary programs in Marine-Estuarine and Environmental Sciences, Toxicology, and a Professional Science Master's degree in Quantitative Fisheries and Resources Economics. DAFRS provides master's and Ph.D. degrees in Food and Agricultural Science. In this position, the faculty member will be responsible for teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses, conducting research focused on human-environmental challenges, and mentoring graduate students. The role also includes publishing research findings in scholarly journals and serving as the Social Science Lead for the NOAA LMRCSC. The faculty member will create and deliver training content on social sciences topics relevant to fisheries management, environmental justice, and the integration of social sciences into fisheries science research. This training will target both undergraduate and graduate students. Collaboration with faculty across various disciplines within SANS and LMRCSC institutions, as well as NOAA scientists, is essential for successful research project execution. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate the potential to secure external funding to support their research endeavors and participate in faculty committees as needed.

Responsibilities
• Teach graduate and undergraduate courses.

• Conduct research in his/her field of expertise focusing on human-environmental challenges.

• Recruit and mentor graduate students.

• Publish in scholarly journals.

• Serve as the Social Science Lead for the NOAA LMRCSC.

• Create and deliver social sciences training content for the Center on topics including policy and fisheries management, cultural interactions with fisheries, social science methodologies in the fisheries sciences, and environmental justice.

• Work collaboratively with environmental/marine, agricultural, and social sciences faculty within SANS at UMES, and across the LMRCSC institutions with NOAA and Center Scientists on Center research projects.

• Demonstrate the potential to secure external funding to support research in his or her field of expertise.

• Perform other related duties as assigned such as participation in faculty committees.

Requirements
• Ph.D. in sociology, geography, anthropology, political science, public policy, environmental economics, and/or other social science disciplines from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

• A strong record of scholarly activity as evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed journals.
