Job Description
The Applied Information/Data Scientist position at Los Alamos National Laboratory involves working with a multidisciplinary team on applied data science research to analyze large datasets. The role includes data collection, modeling, and machine learning, with opportunities for leadership and mentoring. Candidates must have relevant experience and the ability to obtain security clearances. The position is located in Los Alamos, NM, and is not remote.
What You Will Do Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. You will work with the Information Systems and Modeling Group (A-1) on novel applied data science research that makes extensive use of analysis on large datasets ranging from text to numerical to imagery and more. Team members will support and enrich your research and professional goals through their outstanding breadth and depth of expertise in their respective fields. The overarching goal of our research is to gain insights into human behavior using many different data sources and incorporate these insights into predictive models. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 level/Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired to the Scientist 3. Scientist 2 $99,200 - $164,100
You will work with a multidisciplinary team of mathematicians, statisticians, biologists, physicists, and computer scientists on efforts to build models of human dynamics using multimodal data from heterogeneous sources. Project components include data collection and curation, feature extraction, feature selection, time series modeling, machine learning, and data fusion. In addition to what was outlined for Scientist 2, at this level you will take a stronger leadership role on the team by helping lead data science research projects and grant proposals, as well as mentoring students, postdocs, and early-career staff members. You will continue receive mentoring support from other scientific leaders in our organization as you further your leadership experience. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Minimum Job Requirements for Scientist 2: * Experience conducting real-world applied data science research, including novel methods development or novel applications.
• An ability to work and communicate effectively in a diverse team environment.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language. * Publication record in a related field.
• Ability and desire to obtain Q and SCI security clearances, which requires U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
• A bachelor''''s degree plus 4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Ph.D. is highly preferred. Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3: * In addition to the Minimum Job Requirements outlined above at the Scientist 2 level, qualification at the Scientist 3 level requires:
• Sustained experience leading and coordinating grant proposals.
• Sustained research project management experience, including leading small- to medium-sized teams.
• Experience mentoring students, postdocs, and/or early-career staff.
• A master''''s degree plus 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Ph.D. is highly preferred.
Education/Experience at lower level: Positions requires a Bachelor'''' degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master''''s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: Desired Job Qualifications for Scientist 2 * Proficiency with Python or R.
• Experience with modern open-source data science and machine learning toolkits (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, statsmodels, Keras, NLTK, spaCy, tidytext, BeautifulSoup, Pandas).
• Experience with tools and workflows for modern software development (e.g., Git, GitLab/GitHub, unit/integration tests, Docker, SQL databases).
• Experience conducting data science research as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience contributing to grant proposals.
• Experience with project management and program development skills.
• Experience working with real-world "big" datasets
• Experience conducting natural language processing research on large real-world text datasets.
• Mentoring experience.
Desired Job Qualifications for Scientist 3 * Proficiency with Python or R.

Work Location: The position is physically located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
