The United Auburn Indian Community is hiring an Agricultural and Environmental Steward to manage gardens and tribal land, ensuring sustainable practices and ecological integrity. Responsibilities include overseeing vegetation, maintaining recreational grounds, conducting property inspections, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The United Auburn Indian Community (UAIC) is currently seeking an Agricultural
and Environmental Steward for our Facilities and Maintenance department. As a

Position Summary
The Agricultural and Environmental Steward is responsible for the conceptualization,
development, and ongoing maintenance of private gardens and tribal landholdings,
ensuring sustainable land management and ecological integrity. This includes
overseeing the care of vegetation, fruit trees, herbs, and flowers, as well as managing
tribal recreational grounds and conducting routine property inspections. The
Agricultural and Environmental Steward also monitors for trespassing, coordinating
with security personnel, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Job Functions
Essential Functions
• Conceptualizes and assists in the development and ongoing fulfillment of
private gardens for UAIC Memberships. The gardens include vegetables, fruit
trees, berries, herbs, flowers, etc.
• Monitors and maintains grounds for Tribal Recreational facilities, including
horseshoes, batting cage, playground, archery/knife and axe throwing, disc
golf, paintball course, hiking trails, picnic areas, native garden, barn venue,
portable restroom, etc.
• Periodically schedules tours of Tribal school and surrounding landholdings,
including hiking trails, garden, pond, mock tribal village, irrigation and
maintenance.
• Monitors sites for signs of trespassing and cooperates with Security and Risk
Manager to ensure cameras are operational.
• Bi-monthly property inspections are conducted at large Tribal landholdings,
covering pond readings, intrusion/trespassing monitoring, facility checks, and
well inspections. Periodic and scheduled touring of Tribal Cultural land holding,
including leased/farm landholdings.
• Researches and presents strategies for sustainable vegetation management and
land restoration to optimize productivity, reduce negative soil impacts, and
maintain ecological integrity.
• Researches and presents conservation plans to leadership, incorporating best
management practices (BMPs) for soil and water conservation, wildlife habitat
protection, and erosion control.
• Ensures that rangeland and grazing practices meet local, state, and federal
regulations. Recommends best practices to leadership regarding environmental
standards, including water quality, endangered species protection, and land
use policies.
• Conducts field surveys and assessments of soil, water, vegetation, and wildlife
on rangelands to monitor land health and habitat quality.
• Stays updated with the latest research and advances in farming/ gardening,
agriculture and rangeland management.
• Conducts or collaborate on projects to develop innovative practices that improve
land sustainability.
• Assists with monitoring for erosion and water quality.
• Works with the Preservation work group to report any disturbance of known
and existing cultural assets on Tribal land holdings.Non-essential Functions

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge
• Knowledge of vegetation management including native plant propagation and
management
• Knowledge of soil composition, soil health, and best management practices
(BMPs) for soil conservation and erosion control.
• Knowledge of irrigation design, management, and repair.
• Operating knowledge of small engine equipment such as mowers, pruners,
chainsaws, weed-eater, blowers, etc.
• Operating knowledge of hand tools.
• Knowledge of basic mechanical repair techniques.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Basic computer knowledge for data entry and Microsoft Outlook.
Skills
• Proficiency in evaluating, monitoring, and restoring the health of land areas,
including soil, vegetation, and wildlife habitats.
• Acute attentiveness to safety procedures.
• Excellent communication skills both on the phone and in person.
• Attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal directions.
• Skilled in backing-up and towing trailers.
• Leadership skills, such as taking initiative, motivating and helping others,
sharing pertinent information, encouraging teamwork, and providing feedback.
• Well-organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Abilities
• Ability to operate a kestrel (fire weather meter).
• Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and conduct maintenance on a wide variety of
equipment.
• Ability to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools and heavy equipment in a
safe and effective manner.
• Ability to read and interpret maps.
• Ability to verbally communicate tactfully and effectively.
• Ability to exercise good judgment.
• Ability to maintain professional conduct.
• Ability to successfully prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
• Ability to project plan and manage day-to-day activities.
• Ability to oversee others and provide guidance
• Ability to convey the importance and relevance of cultural heritage values to
others.
• Ability to convey the importance of safety.
• Ability to be flexible and respond to after-hours call outs.
• Ability to work in inclement weather, through rugged terrain, while carrying
equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to safely drive in rough terrain working conditions.
• Ability to maintain valid Class C driver’s license.
Ability to clear all necessary background checks.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Class C driver's license
• 5 years of work experience in a comparable role
• Fundamental knowledge of related fields of science (e.g., farm/gardening
practices, wildlife management, forestry, botany, hydrology, fire management).
• Working knowledge of natural resource management, wildland ecology,
concepts, principles, and standards in environmental practices
Preferred qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Horticulture, or a
related field
• Related certifications and credentials
• Valid Class A driver’s license
• 2 years of experience in a lead role in related field.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand;
walk more than half a mile; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or
controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or
crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up
to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job, with or without correction,
include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception
and the ability to adjust focus.
