Job Description
SAIT is seeking Adjunct Instructors for an Environmental Monitoring Program, focusing on non-credit courses. The role involves preparing and delivering lessons, maintaining student records, and fostering a positive learning environment. Candidates should have a Master's or PhD in a related field, experience in education, and knowledge of First Nation communities. Courses will be delivered primarily in-person on the SAIT main campus starting September, with potential for some virtual options.
Position: Adjunct Instructor - Environmental Monitoring Instructors (Expression of Interest)
SAIT’s Continuing Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) focuses on non-credit programs supporting corporate training, the individual learner and international projects. We create courses and programs for life-long learning with careers at our core. Our courses range from exploring general interests to up-skilling for career advancement and res killing for career changes. We complete all background activities required to set up our products for students to purchase and experience several delivery options.
CEPS is building an instructor pool for the delivery of an upcoming Environmental Monitoring Program. Delivery of these courses is anticipated to start in September, in-person on SAIT main campus, with the potential for some virtual deliveries. Courses are non-credit and approximately 1 week in duration.
Courses include:
- Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
- Ecology of Freshwater Systems
- Geology and Use of Water Systems
- Air Quality Monitoring and Improvement
- Water Monitoring and Analysis
- Practicum Science, Culture and Environment
- Basic Sampling, I Spill Response and Basic Sampling II
- Land-based Field Work
- Wellsite Site Abandonment and Reclamation
- Community Engagement and Planning
The Role
• Prepare and present lessons, lectures, assignments, quizzes, exams, lab activities and lab demonstrations for learners if applicable given the course outline
• Maintain records for the purposes of grading, assessing professionalism and tracking attendance in both theory and lab classes if given the course outline
• Maintain engagement with the responsibilities of the course for the duration of the contract
• Manage the classroom to ensure a positive and enriching learning environment
• Show personal interest in the learner and create a climate conducive to optimal learning
• Provide on-going support, guidance and advice to students
• Attend all SAIT training as required
• Achievement of School initiatives and Objectives
• Be an active and engaged member of the School
• Adhere to all safety legislation, guidelines and safety standards as required
• Maintain contact with relevant industry sectors
• All other duties as required for the position
Qualifications
• Master’s Degree, preferably a PhD in related science field or equivelant combination of work and educational experience
• Documented evidence of working with resource-related Industry
• Technical writing and evaluation skills
• Knowledgeable about First Nation communities and realities
• Use multimedia and other tools for instructional design and delivery (MOODLE, Adobe Connect, and Smartboards)
• Experience in education from a culturally based framework and experiential-based learning
• Ability to incorporate Elders or Knowledge Keepers in the course delivery
• Skilled using office-based applications (MS Word, Excel, Adobe)
• Be open to different systems of beliefs, study habits, cultural practices, and communication methods
• Proper command of technologies used in the field, as needed for the courses e.g., GIS, GPS (Global Information Systems, Global Positioning Systems)
• Respect for cultural practices and a willingness to engage in these practices
