Adaptation Climate Fellow

Georgetown University is seeking a JD Class of 2025 graduate for a one-year Adaptation Climate Fellow position at the Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) in Washington, DC. The Fellow will support climate change adaptation projects, conducting research and policy analysis to assist state and local governments in addressing climate impacts. Responsibilities include writing resource summaries and case studies, engaging with practitioners, and facilitating outreach. Strong research and writing skills, along with a passion for climate issues, are required.

Job Overview

The Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) is seeking JD Class of 2025 candidates interested in working with the Center as a Fellow in our Adaptation Program for one year following graduation. The Fellow will support our work on a variety of cutting-edge projects analyzing and identifying best practices for state and local governments preparing for the impacts of climate change (including sea-level rise, storms and flooding; drought; wildfire, and heat).

GCC serves as a resource to states and communities on climate change adaptation law and policy, working directly with state and local government practitioners to help them identify and implement policy solutions to make communities safer in the face of climate driven impacts. In addition to place-based legal and policy support, GCC provides adaptation resources for a range of state and local government practitioners like our Managed Retreat Toolkit and Equitable Adaptation Legal and Policy Toolkit, both launched in 2020. GCC also helps to inform the adaptation dialogue around through the analysis of laws, programs, regulations, and spending. Through topic-based workshops and ongoing peer learning forums like our State Policy Forum and Regional Collaboratives Forum, GCC provides frequent opportunities for engagement among local, state, and federal practitioners to discuss new challenges and best practices for more effectively integrating resilience into legal, policy, and planning solutions.

The Adaptation Fellow will work with GCC staff to conduct research, legal and policy analysis, and writing related to GCC's federal, state, and local resilience work. This includes GCC's place-based work helping states and communities develop climate-informed policies and planning processes, and federal policy developments that affect states and communities. The Adaptation Fellow will also research and write resource summaries and case studies of states and communities implementing innovative best practices to be included in GCC's online toolkits, Adaptation Clearinghouse, and State and Local Adaptation Progress Tracker.

This position will report to our Adaptation Program Director. The Fellow will work with our Associate Director, Institute Associate, Executive and Faculty Directors, and student research assistants.

Requirements and Qualifications

Applicants should be JD Class of 2025 (graduation date winter 2024/25 or spring 2025) students at an ABA-accredited law school and should have strong research, writing, and editing skills and a demonstrated interest in climate change, energy, or environmental law, or a related field.

We prefer, but do not require, applicants who have prior experience working with state or federal governments or nonprofits, particularly working on climate change, energy, and/or environmental law or policy.

Pay Range

The projected hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $55,000 - $60,000. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
