Job Description

The City and County of San Francisco is hiring two Environmental Education Associates for the SF Environment Department. The roles involve educating youth on environmental topics, developing educational programs, and supporting outreach efforts in schools and communities. Candidates should be bilingual in Cantonese and English for one position. This full-time role includes professional development opportunities and requires some evening and weekend work.
SF Environment is hiring for two (2) Environmental Education Associate positions.
• Bilingual in Cantonese and English
• A second position without a specific language specialty

The Environmental Education team supports the City’s zero waste and pollution reduction goals through outreach centered on educating pre-kindergarteners to 12th graders (PK-12) throughout schools and community spaces across San Francisco. Each of our touch points, whether in the classroom or beyond, strive to empower youth to connect with their environment in real and meaningful ways. The team follows a culture of learning and growth, evolving our educational material and innovating new ways of learning and communicating content. We are firmly grounded by the Department’s mission to serve our community and provide education for all, reaching the next generation of change makers through inclusive and learning. This position involves some weekend and evening work.

The Environmental Education Associate is an early career role designed to expose associates to career pathways in environmental education and community outreach while offering professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Over the three-year program you will gain knowledge of environmental education, community outreach, and environmental behavior-change strategies. You will build skills in public speaking, classroom-based and outdoor teaching, and program administration. The program is set up so that each year you will build on the knowledge and skills you acquired the previous year, while tackling different projects and expanding your skillset. Knowledge and skills gained will position you for success as an environmental educator and community outreach professional.

What You’ll Do - The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this position and are not intended to be an inclusive list:
• Deliver classroom and community presentations that educate youth from pre-kindergarten to 24 years old about environmental topics;
• Assist with developing new and evolving educational programs and materials that increase opportunities for San Francisco’s PK-12 schools to achieve zero waste;
• Mentor youth fellows to further SF Environment’s environmental education for all goals;
• Support outreach efforts through community events;
• Research, collect, and compile outreach data, while learning to use Salesforce CRM;
• Coordinate environmental programming with teachers, external partners and other City departments; and
• Perform administrative support and other duties and tasks as requested.
