Job Description
California State University is seeking graduate students for the Teaching Associate (TA) position in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. TAs will provide classroom instruction, prepare course materials, and assist faculty. Candidates must be enrolled in the Fresno State Master’s Program in Geology with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The position is on-site in Los Angeles, CA, and requires up to 20 hours of work per week.

Position Overview :
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences seeks graduate students as Teaching Associate applicants. Teaching Associates typically are responsible for providing classroom instruction. Eligibility is determined by successfulTA eligibility , department eligibility, and adequate funding.
The department is seeking TA applicants for sections of EES 1, EES 4, EES 5, and/or EES 9.TAs will teach sections of 1-5 labs the following semester and could have opportunities to teach other beginning courses in the Department.The department reserves the right to choose the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign TAs to the courses that are appropriate for the department program and curriculum in any given semester. Due to staff and curriculum changes, courses offered may vary, and no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made.
Anticipated Appointment Dates:This position is opened until filled. If you have applied and no other positions are available, you will be notified.
Fall 2025: August 18, 2025 – December 22, 2025;Spring 2026: January 15, 2026 – May 22, 2026Hours/Units per week:Students can work up to 20 hours per week;
1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hours per week (40hrs x 1-unit/15-unit)The typical range for labs is between 1.3-wtus - 5.2-wtus (dependent on courses and number of section(s) assigned)The typical range for lectures is between 3-6 units (dependent on courses and number of section(s) assigned)No more than 7.5-unitsJob Dutiesmay include the following, but will be dependent upon the specific course to which the teaching associate will be assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the faculty member in charge of the course:
Communicating lab curriculum and expectations to students (as instructor of record)Preparing course materials, administering examinationsLaboratory activity set up and clean upMaintain office hours and providing students with extra assistanceWill be responsible for grading student work and determining course gradesAttend a weekly organizational meetingAlso, incumbents may assist faculty with field experience, supervision, simulation exercises, and/or research projects.Qualifications : A candidate for the position of teaching associate in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences must meet the following minimum qualifications:
Admission to and concurrent enrollment in the Fresno State Master’s Program in Geology with a 3.0 GPA or better.Enrollment in at least 6-units for the semester or in two courses toward the degree.Demonstrated, satisfactory progress towards the degree.Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.Completion of a bachelor's degree in geology, environmental science, or related field, or equivalent coursework.Good oral and written communication skills.Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work, especially in the subject matter to be covered by the TA.Application Procedures:The review of applications will begin June 2, 2025 for a Fall 2025 start date.
