Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
DEP’s mission is to conserve, improve, and protect New York's natural resources and environment and to prevent, abate and control water, land, and air pollution to enhance the health, safety and welfare of the people of the state and their overall economic and social well-being. DEP’s Office of Environmental, Health, and Safety (OEHS) supports this mission by ensuring daily operations are conducted in a manner that protects the environment and safeguards the health and well-being of DEP’s workforce and the communities served. OEHS encourages policies and practices that prevent or reduce pollution, conserve resources, and promote efficiency without sacrificing adherence to applicable laws, rules, and regulations. To assure compliance, OEHS operates an Environmental, Health and Safety Assessment Program and maintains effective data tracking systems to monitor DEP's progress in meeting environmental and occupational health and safety commitments.
The Performance Measurement and Strategic Planning (PMSP) division of OEHS uses EHS assessment outcomes, incident investigation data, and program management data, among other information to provide actionable recommendations and inform policies to protect the health and well-being of DEP’s workforce and the communities served. PMSP conducts periodic quality review of agency-wide data to ensure reliability and validity of the information collected, determine trends in outcomes, identify key risk factors, establish or update performance metrics, and uncover opportunities for improvement. This information is shared with stakeholders as part of a larger feedback loop and continuous improvement effort to prevent and control environmental impacts to the community and occupational health and safety risks to DEP workers.
The Summer Graduate Intern in the OEHS PMSP division will participate in one of the following projects:
1) Quality Assurance Review of Environmental, Health, and Safety Incident Investigation Data - The purpose of this project is to conduct an agency-wide quality review of incident investigation data to understand the alignment between incident root cause analyses performed and the associated scope of corrective/preventive action measures taken. The project will also involve the categorization of incidents by EHS program area and the determination of risk prevalence by program area. Incident trends and conformance to EHS requirements will also be reviewed.
2) Review of EHS Assessment Data - The purpose of this project is to review EHS Assessment data outcomes to develop actionable target goals and metrics to contribute to policy development, improve EHS Assessment protocols, and support performance metrics and reporting. Additionally, the project will involve assisting EHS Assessment teams with routine section activities, such as conducting regulatory research and creating guidance documents.
The Intern will present their final project results to the OEHS PMSP team and if selected, may have an opportunity to present their project to the larger agency.
In addition to completing one of the above projects, PMSP interns will also have the opportunity to participate in EHS assessment activities in the field, take a guided tour of a DEP facility, attend informative webinars, and engage in safety awareness programs.
