CMCC Foundation is seeking Climate-economy Modelers with programming skills and a background in environmental or economic sciences. Candidates, including Post-Docs and scientists, will work in Milan on integrated assessment models, focusing on climate-energy-economy interactions. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE) is looking for modelers, with proven programming skills, and an environmental and/or economic background.
We welcome applications from Post-Docs, scientists, and senior scientists with experience in modelling—particularly in climate-economic modelling—and expertise in computational science, environmental sciences or engineering, environmental economics, or related fields.
The selected candidates will join our modelling teams in Milan, working within an international and interdisciplinary environment. They will contribute to European projects in collaboration with international consortia, focusing on the development of integrated assessment models, including:
• Climate-energy-economy models with detailed process representation
• Energy system models
• Macro-economic models

RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate is expected to work closely with our project team and report directly to the The successful applicants will be responsible for contributing and developing coupled climate-economy models, e.g. integrated assessment models such as WITCH, or computable general equilibrium models such as ICES.
Specific tasks include but are not limited to:
• Integration of natural, economic and social feedbacks into climate-economy models
• Developing methods to better represent interactions between natural, economic, and social systems in decision-making.
• Capturing the resources and material requirements of the low-carbon transition.
• Contribution to developing the open-source integrated assessment models.
• Writing and contributing to European projects, scientific publications, and science-policy reports based on this work.
• Present those at scientific workshops and conferences.
The job location is Milan, Italy.
REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for two or more motivated persons with the following requirements:
• Experience in modelling using economic frameworks, such as GAMS, Julia, or JuMP
• Good skills in programming languages such as Python or R
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to work with large datasets and complex models.
• PhD, or close to finishing a PhD computational science, applied mathematics, engineering, physics, or any related fields to integrated assessment models and coupled climate-economy modeling.
• Experience in climate-economic modelling (preferred).
• Fluency in English (Italian not required), good presentation and writing skills.
• Willingness to travel to project meetings and to conferences.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse environment committed to high-quality research.
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
• Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
• The successful candidates will be based in Milan, Italy CMCC offices.
• The appointment period will initially be 24 months starting from September 2025 (with some flexibility) and renewable for two additional years pending a positive evaluation. Tenure can be granted two years after being appointed as a scientist or senior scientist. The gross salary will be based on qualification and working experience and competitive with major research centres in Europe.
• Welfare package, for a minimum 12 months contract.
• Flexible working time as per internal policies.
• Support during the immigration process, if needed.
PROTECTED CATEGORY
Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.
Some fiscal benefits could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).
