# Legal Counsel
Job title: Legal Counsel Location: London or Bristol - Hybrid Salary: £75,000 - £90,000 Closing date for applications: 7th May
Kaluza wants to power a world where net-zero is within everyone’s reach, by building the platform that will accelerate a sustainable, affordable and resilient energy transition. It’s a huge challenge, but often the toughest problems are the most rewarding to solve. Since launching in 2019, Kaluza’s technology has been empowering some of the biggest energy suppliers to better serve millions of customers. From revolutionising billing to smart electric vehicle charging, our real-time cloud platforms transform supplier operations, reducing cost to serve and boosting engagement. And most importantly, they enable suppliers' customers to drive decarbonisation with smart, low carbon technologies. We have a strong flexible, hybrid working ethos, we aim to be as flexible as possible to balance work with life. Teams can choose how and where to work, whether it’s from one of our lovely offices or from home or a mixture of both. Each team is different but we do like to get together monthly/quarterly as teams - if they are not at your local office we will cover the costs of travel and accommodation if necessary. As a company we come together annually for our conference and end of year celebrations!
Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working? As our second legal hire, you'll be at the forefront of ensuring that we navigate the complex legal landscape. Your strategic counsel will be invaluable as we pursue our ambitious business objectives. Collaborating closely with stakeholders from across the organisation, you'll offer legal insight on a diverse range of matters, spanning multiple jurisdictions including Portugal, Australia, the US, and the UK.
About Kaluza Kaluza consists of an Energy Retail platform and Flexibility platform. The Energy Retail Platform is a SaaS technology platform that aims to revolutionise the operating platforms for energy retailers globally. This platform has been built with scale and technical quality in mind and is the foundation for decarbonisation efforts by Kaluza’s customers. Kaluza’s Flexibility platform is designed to be the nervous system connecting energy retailers, grid operators, and consumers. Flex will aid us in creating the distributed, consumer-centric, dynamic energy system of the future. Bridging the gap between distributed renewable generation and smart devices, it helps consumers shift their energy consumption to times when there's more renewable energy. This not only saves them money, but enables society as a whole to meet the challenge of decarbonising transport and residential heating/cooling. We’re also supporting this vital shift by building the innovative technology behind unique, market-leading customer propositions like Vehicle to Grid and Drive Anytime with our energy retailer partners.
What will I be doing? Working hand in hand with our General Counsel, you'll have the chance to shape our legal function in a time of rapid international expansion. Efficiency, enthusiasm, and innovation are qualities we value. We're looking for someone who can thrive in our energetic, flexible and enjoyable atmosphere. While you'll need to love working in a fast-paced environment where change is constant, rest assured you'll also be well supported by our General Counsel and our amazing cross-functional teams. We are poised for accelerated growth over the next five years, and you'll be right in the thick of it! **Key Responsibilities:**1. Legal Compliance: Ensure seamless alignment of company operations with pertinent laws and regulations across all operational jurisdictions.
2. Contract Review and Drafting: Diligently scrutinise, draft, and negotiate a spectrum of commercial agreements, spanning employment contracts, service agreements, vendor contracts, SaaS licensing, and strategic joint agreements.
3. Employment Law Advisory: Offer legal counsel and guidance on all facets of employment law, encompassing hiring practices, employee relations, terminations, discrimination, and formulation of workplace policies.
4. Training and Education: Spearhead enlightening training sessions and workshops for both employees and management teams, fostering a deeper comprehension of legal obligations and preemptively mitigating legal risks.
5. Cross-Functional involvement: Collaborate with all across departments, including our People, Finance, Risk, Product, and Operations teams, to provide pragmatic and succinct legal support for business initiatives and projects.
6. Risk Management: Identify and preemptively address potential legal risks, instituting robust measures to curtail exposure to legal liabilities.
7. Legal Research: Remain abreast of shifts in laws and regulations relevant to our industry and operations, and communicate potential impacts to key stakeholders.
8. Special Projects: Contribute to the execution of specialised legal projects and initiatives as directed by the General Counsel.
9. Company Secretarial Support: Provide support to the General Counsel on matters pertaining to company secretarial duties.
10. Corporate Support: Support corporate and M&A endeavours to achieve organisational objectives.
Is this the job for me? While you'll need to love working in a fast-paced environment where change is constant, rest assured you'll also be well supported by our General Counsel and our amazing cross-functional teams. Solid knowledge and experience in commercial SaaS contracts, particularly in overseas jurisdictions, together with corporate and fundraising experience would be advantageous. This role is not just about your legal ability – it's also about your vision for the future. You'll have the confidence and ambition to not just grow a legal department but to take a proactive, pragmatic, and risk-based approach to tackle legal challenges head-on and uncover opportunities for improvement in our fast-paced, target-driven environment.
