Overview:

We are hiring an experienced UI Design Task Lead to join our newly formed Design Systems team, which is pivotal in establishing and maintaining a cohesive design language and system across ORNL applications and platforms! This position resides in the UX group in the Application Development division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Define and evolve core design principles for the design system.
  • Design the foundational boilerplate of components, patterns, and interactions.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive design documentation in Figma, including style guides, component libraries, patterns, and interactions, resulting in seamless implementation.
  • Guide design system usage and implementation within the organization, ensuring adherence to established standards and practices.
  • Collaborate alongside with sponsors, engineers, and fellow designers to ensure design decisions align with business goals, technical constraints, and user needs.
  • Drive adoption, consistency, and coherence across all products and platforms through design system evangelization.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in design, human computer interaction, computer science or a related field of study and five (5) or more years of related experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 7+ years of proven experience, having a focus on design systems and component-based UI design.
  • Proficiency in Figma, as well as version control systems.
  • Strong understanding of design principles, interaction design, typography, color theory, and user-centered design methodologies.
  • Experience with front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence customers and drive consensus.
  • A portfolio showcasing design system work, including examples of design documentation, component libraries, and UI designs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership abilities, with a track record of successfully leading design system initiatives and driving adoption across an organization.
  • Ease with communicating design decisions to various audiences.
  • Cross-discipline proficiency and understanding of modern digital experiences.
  • Experience working and collaborating in a dynamic, rapid-growth environment.
