Job Description
Our Opportunity:
The Civil Engineer- Renewable Energy will be based in our Arlington, Virginia headquarters or remote in Mid-Atlantic region. In this role you will be a part of civil engineering department responsible for overseeing third party consultants, and provide in house support on geotechnical, hydrology, stormwater, Erosion & sediment control, structural designs and plans, as well as providing technical expertise for all aspect of project development and construction for a utility solar array project. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on in-house civil design including with managing the third-party consultants for site development and land use design.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Civil, geotechnical, stormwater, erosion and control, and structural design scope of work and specifications development to work and manage third party engineering consultants
- Support in house engineering by performing storm water management, erosion and sediment control, hydrology design and permitting
- Grading and earthwork calculations
- Study the geotechnical reports provided by third party consultants, and implement them on civil and structural designs
- Work with CAD experts to create site layout, and plans for storm water management, erosion & sediment control, gradings, roads, and other civil designs
- Perform site visit with internal team and with consultants to identify site development, construction risk, and find a solution with designs
- Provide technical support to origination, development, procurement, construction, and maintenance organizations throughout the life cycle of a project
- Work with racking, steel, invertor, and other suppliers to understand their product, and get inputs for designs
- Consults with department leaders of Engineering, Construction and Operations & Maintenance to create and satisfy long-range operating and construction goals specific to the needs of the organization.
- Manages efforts to problem solve for engineering challenges and coordinates with project consultants and site managers.
- Works with project stakeholders, both internal and external, to develop and maintain the project engineering requirements and specifications.
- Plans and coordinates the work of engineering contractors and staff, ensures that they meet goals and objectives, recruits additional engineers as needed.
- Manages/coordinates with in-house electrical engineering team.
- Develops diagrams and visual aids and prepare design specifications.
- Maintains professional level of communication with management, construction teams, subcontractors, equipment and material vendors, owners, and inspectors.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

Undergraduate degree in engineering or equivalent technical field
3 to 5+ years of civil engineering experience in design, land development, and construction
Strong technical understanding of design drawings, plans, and specifications and able to add value to troubleshooting/problem
Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
Experience in civil engineering codes, and standards
Ability to analyze financial impacts of engineering requirements and challenges.
Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
Team player with strong initiative.
Education, Training, & Certifications and Experience:
PE license or on track to become qualified
Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
Experience in land development design and permitting with Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Department of Transportation (DOT), and counties in Virginia/Mid-Atlantic regions
Utility-scale renewable energy experience in Virginia/East Coast
Work Location, Remote Work, and Travel:
This position will can be based in the Arlington, VA or Remote. Travel may be required throughout Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region up to 25% of time.
