William & Mary is seeking a Summer Conservation Intern to support educational outreach programs at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Unit Mission Statement

The mission of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences (Batten School) is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, education, and advisory service.

The Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA) strives to be a leader in applying science to solve coastal management issues while improving awareness and understanding of coastal resources through education.

Position Summary
• Support CBNERR-VA education and outreach programs including teacher training, public outreach, and field-based summer camps.
• Responsible for assisting with several week-long summer camps for students in 3rd grade through 10th grade, including field experiences, laboratory activities, crafts, and general safety supervision.
• Assist in the dissemination and analysis of educational evaluations.

Conditions of Employment
• This summer intern position is a temporary (hourly) position.
• Must have ability and comfort working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
• All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
• This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
• This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
• High School graduate or equivalent and enrolled in an undergraduate program for the Fall of 2025.
• Interest in marine science and/or education as a possible future career focus.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to work independently and as an effective and collaborative team member.
• Ability to take initiative and contribute to creative programming needs.
• Demonstrated confidence being on vessels (boats, canoes, kayaks), in water.
• Basic competency in MS software packages (Excel, Power Point, Word or comparable document i.e. Google Docs) and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube).
• Experience teaching science related topics to a diverse audience.
• Past experience, which may include paid and unpaid experience, including school work and volunteer work, helps build the competencies and knowledge that translates to these openings.

Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with Chesapeake Bay.
• Demonstrated experience working with school-aged audiences.
