Job Description

The Mojave Desert Land Trust is hiring a Native Plant Nursery Production Assistant in Joshua Tree, CA. Responsibilities include assisting with plant production, maintenance, record-keeping, pest control, and supervising volunteers. The role requires a minimum of one year of relevant experience and may involve weekend or evening work. The position offers a salary between $19.34 and $22.41 per hour and includes benefits such as health insurance and a retirement plan.
The Production Assistant is responsible for assisting the Nursery Manager and/or Lead Production Assistant in the day-to-day operations of the Native Plant Restoration Nursery. This includes assisting with all phases of production, and daily execution of all steps involved in container plant production in a safe manner, including, but not limited to record-keeping, general plant care activities, disease/pest prevention and control, nutrition, irrigation, weeding, and supervision of volunteers. Other duties may include assisting with maintaining the seed bank and demonstration garden, as needed. The Production Assistant may be asked to participate in outreach efforts centered on the plant nursery and seed bank and other events as needed. Working some weekends or evenings may be required.

Starting Salary Range: $19.34 – $22.41 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Employment Status: Full-Time – Non-Exempt (hourly) – Regularly Scheduled to work 40 hours per week Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend work required.

Work Location: Work will be performed in our Native Plant Nursery in Joshua Tree, CA.

Roles and Responsibilities:

· Care and maintenance of plant materials, including but not limited to, sowing, thinning, transplanting, watering, weeding, seed collection and cleaning, and implementation of pest and disease management techniques, of both vertebrate and invertebrate species.

· Preparing soil media mixes for all phases of production.

· Implementing best management practices for Phytophthora and other plant pathogens.

· Maintaining organization and cleanliness of the nursery and equipment.

· Maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

· Assisting with annual plant sales and deliveries.

· Working alongside and/or supervising nursery volunteers for one-time projects and ongoing activities.

· Fulfilling other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience/Qualifications:

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the knowledge and abilities to perform the position is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would include the following:

Experience: A minimum of one year of experience working in a nursery production, landscaping, or restoration environment. Background in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, botany, or related field. Experience propagating, watering, and maintaining nursery stock.

Education and/or Training: Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, or related field, or compelling evidence of equivalent education and/or experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration: Must possess and maintain in good standing a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
