Job Description

Oberlin College is hiring a Food Justice Assistant for enrolled students to support food access initiatives in southern Lorain County. Responsibilities include outreach to farmers, managing the Farm Food Rescue program, and promoting sustainable food systems. The role requires a commitment of about 10 hours per week, excellent communication skills, and physical ability. Preference is given to those available for both fall 2024 and spring 2025.
Job Summary:

These positions are open to currently enrolled Oberlin College students studying on campus. Preference will be given to students able to work in both fall 2024 and spring 2025.

As a Food Justice Assistant, you will work with the food programs team at the social services organization (OCS) to build access to healthy food and produce for the residents of southern Lorain County. This will involve working on OCS's Farm Food Rescue gleaning program and maintaining sustainable food system projects.
Responsibilities
• Gleaning Program Work Includes:
• Outreach to local farmers
• Harvesting and picking up produce farmers agree to donate to our food pantry
• Transporting, cleaning/packaging and distributing gleaned produce through our food distributions
• Sustainable Food System Work Includes:
• Outreach and education in the community
• Research and development of sustainable at-home gardening systems
• Updating and maintaining the community cookbook
• Additional Opportunities:
• Assist with weekly food distributions and pantry management
• Assist with pop-up produce pantries
• Assist local community farmers
• Create written and visual communications content
• Collaborate with Food Programs staff to maintain and expand Food Rescue initiatives

Qualifications
• Commitment to social justice and working with low-income individuals
• * Able to commit approximately 10 hours per week (you get to set your own schedule)
• Excellent communication skills
• Comfortable with physical labor/able to lift up to 50 pounds
• Proficiency or fluency in Spanish preferred
