Job Description
The Compost Outreach and Education Coordinator at Queens Botanical Garden Society is responsible for coordinating education and outreach in Queens, managing partnerships with community compost sites, leading workshops, and overseeing volunteers. Key qualifications include teaching experience, strong public speaking skills, and knowledge of urban composting. This is a full-time position requiring on-site work in Flushing, NY, with benefits including health insurance and PTO.

About This Opportunity
The Outreach & Education Coordinator reports to the Compost Project Manager. This person is primarily responsible for coordinating and delivering education and outreach in Queens; maintain and build partnerships with community compost sites and the FSDO network; lead workshops and trainings; manage volunteers; oversee interns, and support with compost distribution and other operational events. This person must track all their activities and efforts and submit data to the Project Manager in pre-defined quantitative or narrative format as needed.
Responsibilities include:
• Develop and teach educational workshops
• Develop new audiences for outreach and actively cultivate deeper connections in the community relative to composting and organics recycling.
• Support QBG public programs, public events and carry out strategic outreach to reach new communities.
• Manage and deliver off-site programs inclusive of registration, promotion, and follow-up.
• Lead coordination with FSDOs, community compost sites, and community partners to execute technical assistance efforts through info tabling, outreach presentations, educational training, and material distribution.
• Work closely with the Compost Project Manager to train and support interns and volunteers.
• Maintain supply of educational and outreach materials provided by Queens Botanical Garden.
• Ensure upkeep of bins, signage, and active compost vessels at QBG’s Compost Demonstration Site.
• Assist managing the Compost Helpline, e-mail inquiries, and the QBG Compost Instagram Page.
• Develop the monthly compost newsletter with the Compost Project Manager.
• Ability to step in and directly assist the Compost Site Coordinator with tasks such as processing and ensuring efficient site operations as needed.
• Support the team as needed and/or directed by the Compost Project Manager.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent experience in a related field
• Experience teaching
• Strong public speaking skills; able to lead workshops, trainings, and presentations in an informal setting with a large group of volunteers
• Effective administrative and organizational skills (inclusive of Excel, MS Word, Outlook, Slack, and Zoho forms)
• Excellent writing and proofreading skills
• Well-versed in urban composting practices
• Experience with farming and/or woodworking is a plus
• Enthusiastic in expanding knowledge
• Comfortable with graphic design and social media management tools
• Confident taking photographs to document events, activities, and outreach efforts for use in promotions and reporting
• Proven ability to address and resolve challenges proactively in a thoughtful way
• A valid Class D or above New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License
• Extensive knowledge of safety of protocols is required
• OSHA-certified preferred
Schedule:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with weekly on-site work. The benefits offered include excellent medical, vision, dental and life insurance, generous PTO, paid holidays, employee discounts, access to the Museums Council pass, which grants free admission to various museums and cultural institutions, pension and other retirement savings plans. Schedule is generally from Sunday through Thursday, with occasional Saturday and evenings depending on program needs. This position is funded through June 30, 2025, with renewal contingent on City Council funding.
Salary Range: $48,000 - $52,000
