Candidates should be detail-oriented and motivated by ELM's environmental mission. The position offers $18/hour for 15-18 hours per week from January to May 2025, with potential for summer extension. Remote work is primarily allowed, but in-office attendance is encouraged.
About Us

The Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM) and the ELM Action Fund (ELM AF) are committed to advocating for policy and building political power in Massachusetts to meet the scale and urgency of our environmental challenges.

Background

ELM seeks a student fellow with strong communication and design skills, an attention to detail, and an interest in building a career in environmental and/or nonprofit communications.

This position will report to Bianca Pokrzywa, Digital Communications Coordinator, and be a part of the Communications Team led by Leigh Chandler, Communications Director. Additional tasks may be assigned by other staff members related to events, development, partnerships, data management, and more.

Tasks

Communications
• Assist with creating social media captions for posts on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook
• Research and incorporate new trends in marketing and design innovation, such as expanding our SEO/Google Ads use, tracking trending industry practices, and more
• Assist with writing projects such as: event descriptions, press releases, and mass email language

Graphic Design
• Design flyers, graphics, and/or videos for social media, website, and event invitations (using Canva)
• Assist in building out the design and language of our Wordpress websites (ELM, ELM Action Fund, Green Voter Guide, and NetZeroMA), and update websites periodically
• Design advocacy forms in EveryAction and create new mass email templates
• Review design materials from staff members outside the Communications Team to ensure ELM’s brand is consistent across the organization

Data Management
• Update/track data in our EveryAction email marketing system (duplicate management, supporter count, sign-up details)
• Track the growth of follower counts on social media for our “thought leadership” team
• Report on social media, email, and website analytics

Other
• Attend ELM events, as needed, and support event logistics
• Support elections work as needed (phone banking, canvassing)

Preferred Skills

Competitive candidates will have strong writing and design skills and a keen attention to detail. Experience with Canva is required. Experience with mass email platforms is strongly preferred.

While environmental experience is not required, we do seek someone compelled by ELM’s purpose to secure the health and wellbeing of the environment and of future generations.

Terms

$18/hour

The intern's hours will be between 15-18 hours per week, with occasional weeks requiring more or less hours. The internship will run approximately from January through May 2025. There is the potential to extend the position into the summer.

Location: Candidates must be a Massachusetts resident. This position can mostly operate remotely. We strongly encourage fellows in the Boston area to work in the ELM office at least once per week, but it is not required. Fellows should be able travel to occasional events which may be outside of traditional work hours.
