Job Summary
UBC Botanical Garden is an operational unit within the Faculty of Science. Our Vision is that plants are understood, valued, celebrated a secure in a healthy, biodiverse world. The Mission of the Garden is to assemble, curate, and maintain a documented living collection of temperate plants for the purposes of education, research, conservation, community outreach, and public display.
Organizational Status
The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator reports directly to the Associate Director, Sustainability and Community Programs, and is responsible for the planning, development, and delivery of the Sustainable Communities Field School (Field School).
The Field School is a sustainability education and engagement program that aims to mobilize knowledge, action and networks to advance climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation and climate education. The program has 3 goals including (1) adaptation planning for plant conservation in our region, (2) design and development of a biodiversity atlas that will support monitoring and planning, and (3) delivery of climate educational experiences.
The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator is responsible for the development and delivery of the Field School. This position interacts with, and must collaborate across, diverse audiences (Garden staff, students, faculty, government, botanical gardens, and more) in the areas of research, education, engagement, and place-based community development. This includes establishing and enhancing a network of collaborators working on climate adaptation planning and leading efforts to scale climate action and conservation locally and internationally.
The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator will work at UBC Botanical Garden, Vancouver, BC. The position involves some travel to facilitate workshops, give presentations and develop partnerships.

The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator will work closely with Garden staff and the Associate Director, Sustainability and Community Programs. The Coordinator is expected to exercise initiative and good judgment in establishing priorities and conducting day to day administrative and program-related tasks. Major financial matters, partnerships, long-term planning, and large strategic decisions should be brought to the attention of the Associate Director. Errors in judgment or communications could result in reputational damage to UBC Botanical Garden, Faculty of Science and possibly other academic institutions and researchers, with possible consequential financial implications.
Supervision Received
This position offers considerable latitude. Work is reviewed against achievement of tasks and performance objectives identified by the Associate Director Sustainability & Community Programs
Supervision Given
The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator oversees the work of students, staff and volunteers as their work relates to the implementation of Field School projects and programs in their portfolio.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Asset Skills
Coordinates a 5-year program of research, education and engagement to conserve plants and raise awareness of sustainability, climate solutions, and adaptation.
Manages and maintains relationships with key partners and stakeholders.
