Sustainability Intern - General Pool

Position: Candidate for Sustainability Internship
Organization: Various Canadian Environmental Nonprofit Organizations
Location: Canada. The position may be remote or in-person, to be determined by the hiring organization.
Time Commitment: 30 hours/week for a minimum of 13-26 weeks.

Compensation: $20/hr

Start Date: July-September 2024

SUMMARY OF ORGANIZATION & CANDIDATE SELECTION PROCESS:

Eco-Internships is a non-profit organization designed to help other grassroots environmental, non-profit organizations (ENPOs) with human resources and staffing needs. We support ENPOs across Canada by connecting employers to funding opportunities to hire youth interns through wage subsidy grants and other funding. To ensure a successful placement, participants are matched with designated Intern Mentors and participate in a non-profit training course to learn fundamental skills when working in a non-profit.

Resumes submitted through this application pool will be initially reviewed by our team at Eco-Internships and will be distributed to various organizations participating in this program, who will then have an opportunity to schedule an interview with candidates. A candidate who is selected for an internship with an organization will receive an offer letter with a potential start date.

SUMMARY OF ROLE:

The Sustainability Intern will work under the guidance of a Manager and/or Board of Directors. They will also work with an assigned mentor from another environmental group to help guide them in their role. The Sustainability Intern will develop programs, help fundraise, lead communications and social media, support partnerships, and participate in networking opportunities. The sustainability Intern will participate in a mandatory nonprofit internship training program provided by the Capacity Building Institute as part of their role.

COMPENSATION

The Sustainability Intern will be paid $20/hour for 30 hours/per week during the internship.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The possible Sustainability Intern duties are as follows (but not limited to):

• Coordinate communications through social media, website updates, and other communication strategies.

• Assist with fundraising for the organization

• Event management & planning

• General outreach and stakeholder engagement for the organization

• Participate in monthly NCENN meetings and support content when applicable.

• Support the preparation of reports including key materials and photos.

• Potential fieldwork

• Digital communications

• Attend the Intern Training Program and invest in learning and professional development through this program

• Work with an Intern Mentor to support the role

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Committed to sustainability
• Knowledge and understanding of environmental issues
• Experience with environmental non-profit organizations preferred
• Proven capacity to communicate with and work effectively with others
• Experience with volunteer recruitment and support
• Experience with publicity, marketing, and event management
• Proven capacity to work in a self-directed manner, provide leadership to, and collaborate with others in a team situation
• Ability to organize a high volume of work, prioritize, and effectively handle spontaneous demands
• Must be a creative, energetic, flexible, motivated, and detail-oriented professional
• Meet the requirements of qualified interns as established by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (see below)

QUALIFIED INTERNS ARE:
• Post Secondary Graduate
• Between the ages of 15-30 (inclusive) at the start of the internship.
• Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada*.
• Available to work for six months.
• Not employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns)
• Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
