To Take On the Climate Crisis, You Need Data. AI Can Help You Put It to Good Use.

To make meaningful progress on crucial climate and sustainability goals, you need data, says Dr. Karine Serfaty.

“Data has this very strong power to help us not just manage what we measure but also coordinate actors across the economy and within an organization,” Karine says.

And to effectively use data and scale its impact in innovative ways, you may have heard a bit about something that can help: AI. Indeed, how you can get the most out of data and AI with the planet in mind is the subject of our upcoming four-week online course: Leveraging Data and AI in Sustainability

If you’re a sustainability consultant, engineer, or data scientist—or a business leader or marketing or communications pro keen to better understand this area—this course is for you. Importantly, prior experience in data or technology is not a requirement.

Meet the Course Creator, Dr. Karine Serfaty

Karine is an economist by training (she holds a PhD from Harvard, 2008) who has worked over the years for the New York Times (where she rose from Executive Director, Strategy to become SVP, Data and Insights) and later the Economist (where she was Chief Data Officer) as well as numerous others.

Those experiences taught her a lot about getting the right metrics and KPIs in front of the right people to drive progress. “That’s the power of data—to transform organizations and act in a coordinated manner at speed—that I think is very much needed in climate, as well,” she says.

What You Can Expect

To begin, you’ll learn to spot data opportunities that can drive sustainability actions, to assess data quality and maturity, and to apply data strategically—along with the roles AI can play along the way. (By AI, we mean both traditional machine learning and more recent generative AI.)

You’ll then learn how to build a business case for translating and scaling that data into action in a way that will resonate with stakeholders and ultimately drive organizational change to support sustainability goals. When you finish the four-week program, you’ll have built a data strategy to accelerate corporate sustainability. You’ll also have a chance to discuss and connect with others interested in this space.

Enrollment for the course closes on Monday, September 9, so don’t wait to apply!
