The Energy System Is Poised for a Major Overhaul. Are You Ready?

Our Energy Decarbonization Pathways and Tools course can help you meet the moment.

Our energy system faces an upheaval as decades of dependence on fossil fuels must swiftly give way to renewables. This means so much more than adding new solar and wind power. It means a vast overhaul of the grid, buildings, appliances—all the ways we make and use energy. You need to be ready to be part of it.

Solar has recently become the “cheapest electricity in history” per the International Energy Agency. And with climate impacts stacking up, the need to ditch fossil energy and “electrify everything” grows ever clearer. So what can you do? How can you be prepared to meet this moment?

Our Energy Decarbonization Pathways and Tools Course

Whether you’re a software engineer or sales pro looking to specialize in clean energy—or perhaps already have an energy career as an analyst, consultant, or manager—or even have a role involving compliance, regulations, or communications, our upcoming Energy Decarbonization Pathways and Tools course is for you.

This four-week course looks at not just the importance of electrification but what this means across sectors, along with how the grid works and how we can make it cleaner and more resilient. If you’re worried you might trip over the math—or untangling megawatts, volts, British thermal units, and kilowatt-hours—you’ll finish with new quantitative skills and confidence in your baseline energy knowledge.

You’ll also learn to apply these techniques to make smart and meaningful energy decisions while navigating key opportunities, bottlenecks, and common obstacles to clean energy transitions. Throughout the course, we’ll use a “systems lens” to recognize the interconnection of relevant policy, justice, technology, labor, and market concerns.

Meet Course Creator Zach Birnholz

Energy expert Zach Birnholz is a longtime instructor for both this course and Terra.do’s flagship 12-week Learning for Action fellowship. He holds a master’s in environmental science and engineering (Stanford, 2019). Among other highly neat projects, he has helped displace hundreds of megawatts (read: huge amounts) of fossil power by shifting how big companies like Walmart get their energy.

The course meets online once a week, and the total time commitment adds up to around four hours weekly, counting asynchronous work. It’s a chance to connect and network with others interested in energy transitions while also building an energy action plan relevant to your profession. And it comes with lifetime access to our detailed course content, as well as a completion certificate.

Enrollment closes on Monday, September 16, so don’t wait to join us!
