Job Description

Kenya Marine Programme, a branch of A Rocha, works in Watamu Marine Park to understand and protect the diverse marine habitats in the Western Indian Ocean. They focus on habitats such as mangrove forests, sandy beaches, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. These habitats are under threat from coastal development, climate change, and fishing pressure.

A Rocha Kenya is looking for graduate students who are willing to immerse themselves in all aspects of marine biodiversity research and conservation. They are specifically seeking volunteers in two categories: 1) students pursuing a degree in marine biology who can contribute to existing projects such as shark monitoring, rock pool monitoring, and microplastics research, and 2) graduate students (Masters or PhD) who are looking for a research site or want to facilitate marine work in the area.

Preference will be given to candidates who can swim long distances, have experience using spreadsheet programs for data entry and analysis, and are comfortable working in and around boats. Candidates with an internationally recognized SCUBA certification, previous experience in tropical marine environments, a degree in marine science, and experience analyzing scientific data will also be favored. Preference will also be given to candidates from East Africa.

In addition to the normal volunteer requirements, potential volunteers may be asked to research Kenyan marine parks and write a one-page essay on a specific threat to these parks and possible solutions. They may also be asked to write a second one-page essay on the intersection of marine conservation and faith. Lastly, volunteers may be asked to complete a job description in markdown format.
